How we review

Updated October 5, 2026

The tool is usually the smallest part of the bill, and the hardest to compare, because every vendor measures usage differently. This guide works through the cases where the numbers are published and says plainly where they are not.

The Short Answer

From nothing to a few tens of dollars a month for the tool itself, plus hosting, music and your own time. The harder part is comparing tools, because each measures usage differently: Jellypod publishes 30 credits per audio minute, Sintra Studio charges one credit per character, and Wondercraft and ElevenLabs do not publish a fixed credit cost per finished minute because it depends on voices, models and options. Prices below were checked on 5 October 2026 and change often, so confirm on the vendor's pricing page.

What You Actually Pay For

There are five cost lines. The tool: a subscription, usually with a monthly allowance of credits or media hours. Hosting: most generators export a file and leave hosting to you; Jellypod includes hosting and distribution in its plans. Music: either a library inside the tool or a separate licence. Rights: commercial use is often tied to a paid plan. And time, which is the largest line for most people: scripting and checking the audio takes longer than generating it.

Worked Example: One 30-Minute Episode

Jellypod is the cleanest case, because it publishes its rate. At 30 credits per audio minute, a 30-minute episode uses about 900 credits. On the Starter plan, 5,000 credits cost $25 a month billed annually, so one such episode uses about $4.50 of the monthly allowance, and the plan covers about five of them a month. Sintra Studio is the second case with a published unit: one credit per character, and by its own conversion about 1,500 words is about 10 minutes of audio. A 30-minute episode is therefore about 30,000 credits, three times the 10,000-credit free Starter allowance. The same 30,000 free-voice credits are listed for Pro, which is sold through sales with no public price, so we cannot give a dollar figure. For Wondercraft and ElevenLabs we cannot turn the published credits into a cost per minute without testing, and we would rather say so than guess.

Free Plans and Trials Compared

Wondercraft's free plan has 150 credits and 720p export; its Creator plan is $25 a month, or $21 billed annually, with 1,000 credits. ElevenLabs' free plan gives 10,000 credits a month; Starter is $6 a month with a commercial licence. Descript's free plan includes one media hour and 100 one-time AI credits, and it edits recordings rather than generating episodes. Async's free plan gives one hour of lifetime remote recording with a watermark, and its paid prices could not be verified. Jellypod has no free plan, only a seven-day trial that needs a payment method. Sintra Studio's free Starter plan has 10,000 credits with no card and no expiry; whether it allows commercial use is not stated on the pages we reviewed. Before paying for anything, a no-signup voice tester like Sintra Studio's lets you hear a voice on two sentences of your own script, which settles whether the voice is acceptable before credits come into it.

Costs People Forget

Retakes: a regenerated passage uses credits again, so a rough script costs more than a clean one. Plan limits: Wondercraft's three-user collaboration and 4K export start on Pro; Descript meters AI credits separately from media hours. Hosting: Spotify for Creators is free, while Buzzsprout, Transistor and Acast have their own pricing, so add that line if your generator does not host. Music: Wondercraft has a built-in royalty-free library, but a tool whose exports are voice-only means a separate editor and, if you use commercial tracks, a separate licence.

How to Estimate Your Own Cost

Take the word count of one finished script. At about 150 words a minute, divide by 150 to get minutes. Convert to the vendor's unit: 30 credits a minute for Jellypod, one credit per character for Sintra Studio, and for the others run a short test and read the credits used. Add a margin for regenerated lines, then compare against the plan allowance. Do the same for a typical month, not one episode, because the plan that fits one episode may not fit a weekly show.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words is a 30-minute episode?

At roughly 150 words a minute, about 4,500 words.

Is a free plan enough for a weekly show?

Rarely. Free allowances are meant for trying the tool. Sintra Studio's 10,000 free credits cover about ten minutes of audio by its own conversion, and Wondercraft's free plan has 150 credits and 720p export.

What is the cheapest way to start?

Use the free plans and the tester on a short script, compare the results by ear, then pay for the one that fits. Remember that hosting, music and commercial rights are separate lines.

Why can you not give a cost per minute for every tool?

Wondercraft and ElevenLabs do not publish a fixed credit cost per finished minute, and Sintra Studio's Pro plan has no public price. We state costs only where the vendor publishes the numbers.
